what is love bombing?

love bombing

Love bombing is excessive affection, attention and praise early on, used to build emotional dependency before you have had time to decide anything. The confusing part is that no single piece of it looks wrong. Compliments, gifts, constant texting, a whole shared future sketched out by week two. Any one of those is just enthusiasm. The tell isn't the warmth, it's the pacing. It's too much, too fast, for someone who cannot possibly know you yet. Real intensity builds as information accumulates. Love bombing arrives fully formed, before there is anything to base it on.

how to tell

  • the future talk starts before they know your friends’ names
  • the praise is aimed at a version of you they invented, not one you recognise
  • declining any of it gets treated as rejection
  • the intensity swings warm and cold, and you notice yourself working to get the warm back

what to read on this

  • Attached Amir Levine & Rachel Heller why anxious attachment is limerence-prone. the obsessive machinery was already running before you met them, it just found a target.
  • How to Break Your Addiction to a Person Howard Halpern a whole book on attachment hunger. needing a person like a fix, and how intensity gets mistaken for depth.

also asked

is love bombing always deliberate?

No. Plenty of it comes from people who are anxious, lonely or moving fast because they can't tolerate uncertainty, and they aren't running a strategy. The effect on you is the same either way, which is why the useful question is about pacing rather than about their intentions.
