what is intermittent reinforcement in relationships?
intermittent reinforcement
Intermittent reinforcement is reward delivered unpredictably instead of reliably, and it is the most persistent conditioning pattern anyone has found. Skinner's animals pressed the lever hardest when the food came at random. Slot machines are built on it. So is hot-and-cold treatment. This is the real reason someone inconsistent is harder to leave than someone steadily cold. Steady coldness gives you a clean read and you go. Randomness keeps you checking. You are not weak for staying. You are running a very old piece of wiring, and it is doing exactly what it was built to do.

- you cannot predict which version of them you will get on a given day
- the good days feel disproportionately good, because they are scarce
- you have started editing your own messages to avoid triggering the cold version

what to read on this
- How to Break Your Addiction to a Person Howard Halpern a whole book on attachment hunger. needing a person like a fix, and how intensity gets mistaken for depth.
- Attached Amir Levine & Rachel Heller why anxious attachment is limerence-prone. the obsessive machinery was already running before you met them, it just found a target.

why is inconsistent treatment so hard to walk away from?
Because unpredictability is what makes a reward compelling, not the reward itself. A reliable partner gives you a stable read, so your attention can go elsewhere. An unreliable one keeps your attention permanently on them, and that constant focus is very easy to mistake for how much you care.

- anxious attachment An attachment style marked by a fear of abandonment and a pull toward inconsistent partners. The obsessive-thought machinery that limerence loves to borrow.
